🤔 What is gamification?

Gamification is the use of game design elements and techniques in non-game contexts to engage and motivate people to achieve their goals. It can be used in a wide range of applications, such as marketing, education, and productivity. Gamification can be an effective way to increase engagement and motivation, particularly when it is well-designed and aligned with the goals and interests of the people being targeted.

Gamification often involves adding elements of competition, rewards, and feedback to a task or activity. For example, a company might use gamification to motivate employees to complete training by offering rewards for completing certain courses or levels. In a marketing context, gamification might involve creating a game or contest to engage customers and encourage them to make purchases or share content with their friends.

Another successful gamification project was titled the Piano Staircase, which essentially transformed a plain staircase into a music-playing piano. This experiment was created to find out if more people would use the stairs over the escalator. As the result, 66% more people took the stairs!

🧐 Getting gamification right.

Gamification can be an important element of user experience (UX) design because it can help to engage and motivate users to achieve their goals. When used effectively, gamification can make a task more enjoyable and rewarding, which can lead to increased satisfaction and motivation.

In UX design, gamification can be used in a number of ways to improve the user experience. For example, it can be used to:

  1. Engage users and make tasks more enjoyable: Gamification can make tasks and activities more enjoyable by adding elements of competition, feedback, and rewards. This can make it more likely that users will continue using a product or service.
  2. Motivate users to achieve their goals: Gamification can be used to motivate users to complete tasks or reach certain goals. For example, a fitness app might use gamification to motivate users to exercise more by offering rewards for reaching certain fitness milestones.
  3. Encourage users to explore and learn: Gamification can be used to encourage users to explore new features or learn new skills. For example, a language learning app might use gamification to encourage users to complete lessons and progress through different levels.
  4. Bring up a sense of community and social interaction: Gamification can be used to create a sense of community and social interaction among users. For example, a social media platform might use gamification to encourage users to interact with each other by offering rewards for sharing content or inviting friends to join.

Overall, gamification can be an effective way to improve UX by making tasks and activities more engaging, rewarding, and motivating for users.

📈 Gamification increases user engagement.

Gamification can significantly increase user engagement and retention. It is a simple and effective means of driving engagement with your customers. With gamified reward programs, you can convert customers into brand advocates without needing a heavy marketing or advertising campaign. Customers can track their progress, compete with others and unlock rewards, strengthening the bond between your brand and its community of loyal customers.

🔥 The following are an example of gamification:

👾Duolingo

👾Habitica

👾Linkedin

Fitbit: Fitbit is a popular fitness tracker that uses gamification to motivate users to exercise more. It offers rewards for reaching certain fitness milestones and allows users to compete with their friends.

Duolingo: Duolingo is a language learning app that uses gamification to encourage users to complete lessons and progress through different levels. It offers rewards for completing tasks and challenges and allows users to compete with their friends.

Habitica: Habitica is a task management app that uses gamification to motivate users to complete their tasks. It allows users to create a virtual avatar and progress through different levels by completing tasks and earning rewards.

Linkedin: Even LinkedIn a platform for recruitment (which isn’t the most indicative of fun) has used gamification. In a style of a progress bar and badges, to entice a user to complete their profile so that they would be more likely to attract a hirer. It was incredibly successful, and LinkedIn was able to boost the rate of completed profiles up to 55%.
